IRS Officer’s Daughter Dragged by Ex-Help to Use Fingerprint on Safe

Delhi Police said a former domestic helper, identified as 23-year-old Rahul Meena, has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 22-year-old UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) aspirant at her home in Amar Colony, South Delhi. Police allege Meena broke into the house early on April 21, dragged the unconscious victim from her rooftop study to a lower floor in an apparent attempt to use her fingerprint to open the family’s biometric safe, and fled after stealing cash and jewellery. He was arrested on Wednesday at a hotel in Dwarka.

According to investigators, the victim — an IIT graduate and the daughter of a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer — was alone at home on the morning of April 21 while her parents were at the gym. Police say Meena, who had been dismissed from service about six weeks earlier for alleged mishandling of money, used an extra key and knowledge of the family’s security codes to bypass the house’s four-layered security at about 6:28 am and proceeded to the rooftop study.

Police allege that when the woman resisted, Meena struck her with a heavy lamp, rendering her unconscious, and then sexually assaulted her. During interrogation, officers say he dragged her to the floor where the biometric locker was kept and tried to unlock it with her thumbprint. Sources cited by India Today told police the scanner did not recognise the print, possibly because it was blood-stained or the victim had no blood circulation. Meena then allegedly forced the locker open with a screwdriver and stole roughly Rs 2 lakh in cash and jewellery, according to PTI. He reportedly changed into the victim’s brother’s clothes and left the house around 7:22 am.

Police further allege the Delhi attack was part of a wider spree: they say Meena had earlier raped a neighbour in his native village in Alwar, Rajasthan, and then travelled to Delhi. A 15-team police task force arrested him in Dwarka on Wednesday. He has told investigators he was under financial pressure linked to an addiction to online gaming.

A case has been registered against Meena for rape, murder and robbery. Delhi Police said they are awaiting the final medico-legal report to determine the full extent of the assault and related injuries.
