Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are gearing up for a pivotal assembly election on Thursday, April 23, a race that will shape the political landscape for the next five years. In Tamil Nadu, the BJP-AIADMK alliance is striving for a comeback, while in West Bengal, the BJP seeks to dethrone Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has held power for 15 years.
In Tamil Nadu, a total of 14,59,039 first-time voters are casting their ballots in a single phase election covering all 234 assembly seats. A significant 4,023 candidates are vying for votes from over 5.73 crore eligible voters. Enhanced security measures have been implemented, with the Election Commission launching a crackdown to prevent any attempts by political parties to sway voters.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik confirmed the state’s readiness for the elections in a recent press conference. She detailed that the electorate comprises approximately 2.93 crore women and 2.83 crore men, along with 7,728 individuals identifying as third-gender. Voting will occur at 75,064 polling stations spread across 33,133 locations, with a deployment of 1,06,418 ballot units, control units, and VVPAT machines. A reserve of 20% for EVMs and 30% for VVPATs has been maintained to minimize technical issues.
Among the key players in the Tamil Nadu political arena are the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance. Actor Vijay’s party, the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TVK), is contesting independently in hopes of making its mark. The election also accommodates a significant number of senior voters; 3,98,513 electors aged 85 and above have already taken advantage of home voting facilities.
Meanwhile, West Bengal is today holding the first phase of its elections, covering 152 of the 294 assembly constituencies. Over 3.22 crore voters are eligible to participate, setting the stage for a fierce contest between the BJP and the ruling TMC. Political rhetoric has intensified, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah leveraging multiple rallies to galvanize support for the BJP, accusing the TMC of governance failures including infiltration and corruption. “Both Love Jihad and Land Jihad will come to an end… farmers will receive ₹9,000, and women and unemployed youth will receive ₹3,000 per month,” Shah asserted during his campaign speeches.
In contrast, the TMC has countered BJP’s claims, branding them as “Bohiragoto” or outsiders, and recently lodged a complaint alleging the BJP is operating “special trains” from Surat to Bengal, ostensibly to influence voters by offering free travel and meals.
The stakes are high in both states as voters prepare to make critical decisions that will influence governance and policy direction for the next five years. As the campaigns reach their culmination, close attention will be paid to voter turnout and the overall impact of these elections on the political dynamics within Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
