Stocks Surge Nearly 1% on Breakthrough Hopes in Iran-US Talks
Mumbai, April 21: Indian equity markets gained for a third straight session on Tuesday as the BSE Sensex surged 753.03 points (0.96%) to close at 79,273.33 and the NSE Nifty rose 211.75 points (0.87%) to finish at 24,576.60, supported by falling crude oil prices and hopes of progress in Iran–US peace talks. During the day the Sensex touched an intraday high of 79,367.08, up 846.78 points (1.07%).
The rally was broad-based, with BSE MidCap Select climbing 0.73% and SmallCap Select up 0.29%. Sectoral gains were led by FMCG, which rallied 2.23%, followed by Realty (2.17%), MidSmall Private Banks Quality Tilt (1.71%), Private Banks (1.67%), Top 10 Banks (1.66%) and Bankex (1.46%). Capital Goods was the only sectoral laggard.
Among individual stocks, Trent topped the Sensex pack with a 3.55% rise. Other notable winners included Hindustan Unilever, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank. On the downside, Bharat Electronics, Titan, Reliance Industries and NTPC underperformed the index.
Global energy cues helped sentiment after Brent crude traded 0.75% lower at USD 94.76 a barrel, easing concerns about near-term supply disruptions. “Indian equity markets traded on a positive note, as investors positioned for a potential near-term de-escalation in the Middle East. Energy markets remained in a consolidation phase, as traders balanced hopes of a near-term resolution and a potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz against ongoing uncertainty around ceasefire negotiations,” said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth-tech firm.
Investors appeared to favour defensive consumer names and banks amid the risk-on move, while capital goods stocks lagged. The session’s gains extend a short-term recovery after recent volatility and underline how geopolitical developments and oil prices continue to sway market direction. (PTI)
