Pahalgam Anniversary: India Tightens Security, Warns Terror Groups
The Indian Army on the eve of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam attack issued a blunt warning to those responsible, saying the country’s response is “decisive when boundaries of humanity are crossed,” as families of the victims said they are still struggling to come to terms with the loss. A black-marble memorial bearing the names of the 26 victims — 25 tourists and local ponywallah Adil Shah — has been erected along the banks of the Lidder river in the Baisaran meadows as a tribute.
The attack, which occurred on April 22, killed holidaymakers including 65-year-old N. Ramachandran, who was shot while on holiday in Kashmir with his wife, daughter and grandchildren. The killings triggered nationwide outrage and prompted India to launch Operation Sindoor, described by authorities as a military response targeting terror launchpads in Pakistan.
Relatives continue to bear the emotional toll. Arathi R. Menon, who witnessed her father’s killing, said she had nothing more to say and was not in a state to comment, adding, “I don’t want to say anything more. A year has gone by, and everything is the same. I am so sorry.”
Ahead of the anniversary, the Army posted on X: “When boundaries of humanity are crossed, the response is decisive. Justice is Served. India Stands United. #SindoorAnniversary #JusticeEndures #NationFirst.” The post included a symbolic digital poster showing a silhouetted map of India and the slogan “SOME BOUNDARIES SHOULD NEVER BE CROSSED,” with the letter O represented by a bowl of sindoor (vermilion) and the tagline “INDIA DOES NOT FORGET.”
The Army had earlier posted on X on May 7 last year about the operation, using similar imagery and naming it “OPERATION SINDOOR,” where one of the Os was depicted as a bowl carrying sindoor.
Local and political responses continued on the anniversary. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde handed over a newly constructed house to Adil Shah’s family, fulfilling a promise made last year, while the Shiv Sena held a function in Adil’s native Hapatnar village with Shinde participating virtually.
To ensure a peaceful commemoration, the Jammu and Kashmir administration deployed additional police and paramilitary forces in and around Pahalgam, increasing checks at multiple points and boosting surveillance. Senior officials said all necessary arrangements have been made for an event expected to draw politicians, civil society members, families of the victims and local representatives.
