Manipur CM’s Urgent Plea to Withdraw Shutdown Amid Public Hardship

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday appealed to civil society organisations and the public to withdraw a five-day shutdown that had entered its second day, saying the action was harming public welfare and disrupting normal life.

The shutdown was called by various civil society groups and a Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in protest against the killing of two children at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district on April 7. Protesters have been demanding, among other things, the arrest of those responsible for the incident.

The Chief Minister said the state government has taken note of the demands and is treating them with seriousness, adding that most of the JAC’s demands related to the Tronglaobi incident have been accepted by authorities.

Urging people to remain calm and cooperate, he warned that continued shutdowns inflict hardship on daily-wage earners and disrupt essential services. He stressed the need to preserve peace, unity and a sense of collective responsibility across the state.

Referring to ongoing talks, the Chief Minister said the government has held multiple rounds of discussions with the JAC and acknowledged public concerns. He added that steps have been initiated to support the bereaved family, including a proposal to provide suitable state government jobs to both parents of the deceased children.
