Iran-Israel War Live: Iran Accuses US, Vows Swift Response
U.S. forces boarded and seized the Iranian-flagged container ship Touska off the coast of Chabahar in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, and maritime security sources said on Monday the vessel was likely carrying items Washington considers “dual-use” — goods that can have both civilian and military applications.
The small ship is operated by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), a group already subject to U.S. sanctions. Ship-tracking data on MarineTraffic showed Touska was boarded off Chabahar and last reported its position at 1308 GMT.
U.S. Central Command said Touska’s crew failed to comply with repeated warnings over a six-hour period and that the vessel was in violation of a U.S. blockade. The command gave no further public details about the boarding or any cargo inspections.
Anonymous maritime security sources told Reuters their initial assessment was that the ship, after a voyage from Asia, was likely carrying material Washington would classify as dual-use. One source added the vessel had previously transported items described as dual-use.
If confirmed, the seizure underscores U.S. concerns about shipments that could support military capabilities and highlights ongoing enforcement of sanctions on Iranian shipping networks.
