City Crackdown: 91 Traffic Violators Fined Rs 1.02 Lakh
The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) fined 91 motor vehicle offenders and detained several vehicles during an intensified enforcement drive across the city on Saturday night, recovering a total of Rs 1.02 lakh, authorities said on April 19. The operation targeted illegal vehicle modifications, black window tints, drunk driving and other traffic violations with a special focus on noisy two-wheeler exhausts and reckless riding that disturb residents and increase road risk.
Officers concentrated checks on motorcycles fitted with altered silencers that produce excessive noise late at night, and on riders engaging in dangerous overtaking and other unsafe behaviours. Teams also inspected lighting modifications and window tints that violate safety and visibility norms. Enforcement action included vehicle detentions and penalties issued under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said several vehicles were detained and violators were fined in accordance with the law. He reiterated that under the Motor Vehicles Act the permissible sound limit for motorcycle exhausts is capped at 80 decibels and that any modification exceeding this limit is illegal.
The crackdown follows growing public concern about noise pollution and a reported rise in road accidents involving two-wheelers. The STP has signalled a zero-tolerance approach to such violations in recent drives, previously using a road roller at the Police Reserve to destroy seized illegal exhausts as a deterrent.
Officials said the continuing initiative aims to curb noise pollution and improve overall road safety in Shillong, stressing that stricter enforcement will remain a priority to protect public peace and reduce traffic accidents.
