Nyishi Day in Yachuli, Arunachal: Celebrate Identity, Inclusive Growth
The 19th Nyishi Day was observed at the General Ground in Yachuli on Sunday, April 19, bringing together community leaders, public representatives and residents for a programme focused on cultural identity, heritage and future aspirations. Organised by the Nyishi Elite Society (NES), Keyi Panyor district unit, the event drew elders, youth and grassroots representatives from across the Nyishi community.
The ceremony opened with NES Chairman T.D. Neckom hoisting the Nyishi flag. In his address, Neckom urged a progressive and inclusive approach within the community, stressing the Nyishi role in contributing meaningfully to the broader national framework. Speakers also welcomed the recognition of April 19 as a gazetted holiday, saying the official status has increased participation and strengthened collective engagement with the observance.
The programme revisited the community’s successful campaign to replace the colonial-era term “Dafla” with “Nyishi,” a change formalised by the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Act, 2008. Organisers recalled the movement led by the late Tania Sala, supported by NES and the All Nyishi Students’ Union, as a pivotal step in restoring the community’s identity and dignity. Tabia Chobin, Secretary In-Charge of the CEC NES (Keyi Panyor), described the transition as a landmark assertion of identity.
Other speakers, including ZPC Nabam Piju and Er. Toko Taib, called for unity, cultural preservation and development that is inclusive and responsive to contemporary needs. The event was attended by several dignitaries and community representatives, among them YCEF General Secretary Gem Dopum, ATCO President Tagang Bida, former ZPM Joram Elyu, Gaon Burahs, PRI members and members of the public.
From its early observance at Indira Gandhi Park to its present scale in Yachuli, Nyishi Day has evolved into a platform for reflecting on cultural continuity and developmental goals. Similar celebrations across Nyishi-inhabited areas of Arunachal Pradesh and adjoining parts of Assam underscored a shared commitment to safeguard heritage while pursuing inclusive progress.
