A 55-year-old former police constable, identified as Rambeer Singh, has been arrested on April 14 for allegedly murdering an unidentified beggar and burning the body near Hathras Road Halt on the North Eastern Railway, police said. Authorities say the crime occurred on March 12 and that Singh staged the scene by placing his identity card and some of his belongings beside the charred corpse, apparently to make investigators believe he himself was dead.
The case was registered at the Hathras Government Railway Police (GRP) station after a burned, unidentified elderly man was found near the halt. GRP Hathras in-charge Suwash Singh told reporters that investigators uncovered a deliberate attempt to mislead authorities: Singh allegedly killed the beggar, set the body on fire and left personal items to create a false impression of his own death. The motive for faking his death remains unclear.
Police said Singh, a resident of the Kishni area in Mainpuri district, had been dismissed from service earlier for criminal activities. Investigators further allege he has a history of several offences, and multiple cases — including kidnapping, murder, theft and fraud — have been registered against him in the past. Officials added that Singh himself suffered burn injuries during the incident.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed. Investigators believe the man was a mendicant, reportedly dressed in saffron robes, and are continuing efforts to establish his name and next of kin. Forensic teams and local police are carrying out further inquiries to reconstruct the sequence of events and to determine the exact motive and circumstances surrounding the killing and subsequent burning.
Authorities said the probe is ongoing and more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
