Guwahati, April 16: Assam Royal Global University (RGU) on Monday signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Navy at the office of the Navy Welfare and Wellness Association (NWWA) in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, becoming the first private university from Northeast India to enter into such a partnership. The agreement opens new education pathways and financial support for the wards and dependents of defence personnel.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the NWWA by its President, Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, and Commodore S. M. Urooj Athar for the Indian Navy. Prof. D. N. Singh, Registrar (Academics) of RGU, signed for the university. The collaboration will allow eligible candidates from naval families to access undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at RGU with substantial fee concessions.

Mrs. Tripathi described the pact as “more than just an agreement, it’s a promise to our community,” noting that NWWA has secured educational concessions ranging from 100% to 50% for wards of serving, retired and Sahara-supported naval personnel across a wide spectrum of courses. Commodore Athar added that education is empowerment and said the partnership aims to create pathways for children of naval families to access quality education without financial barriers.

Prof. D. N. Singh called the MoU a matter of “immense honour and privilege” and announced two dedicated scholarship categories under the scheme. The ‘Royal Shaurya’ scholarship will provide 100% tuition support to families of martyrs and gallantry awardees, while ‘Royal Suraksha’ will cover 50% of tuition fees for wards of serving and retired defence personnel. The scheme extends to serving personnel, ex-servicemen, personnel with disabilities, and those who died in harness.

Under the agreement, the Indian Navy will promote the scholarship scheme across its schools, ranks and institutions and will forward eligible candidates in a timely manner. The Navy will also nominate a single point of contact to coordinate policy and administrative matters, verify eligibility, and provide required service documentation for credential checks.

RGU is a multi-disciplinary university offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes across faculties such as Science, Engineering, Management and Commerce, Architecture, Paramedical and Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Law, Humanities and Social Sciences, Fine Arts and Design, and Sports.
