Mizoram Unveils India’s Groundbreaking Digital Census — Governor Leads
Aizawl, April 16, 2026 — Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Thursday formally launched the intensive houselisting and housing phase of the Census of India 2027 at Lok Bhavan in Aizawl, with the state becoming the first in the country to begin the exercise in a digital format. The launch marks Mizoram’s entry into the nationwide census drive and signals the start of door-to-door enumeration for the preparatory phase of the decade-long population count.
Addressing officials at the event, Governor Singh urged census field functionaries to perform their duties “with dedication and sincerity,” emphasising the importance of accuracy and commitment during the intensive houselisting operation. State officials said the phase will map and record household structures and basic dwelling information as part of preparations for the full census enumeration scheduled under the Census of India 2027.
Officials present described the rollout as a digitally enabled operation, with field teams conducting enumeration using electronic tools to capture data. Mizoram’s move to begin digitally represents an early adoption within the national exercise and aims to streamline data collection in the preparatory stage.
The state government said the exercise is part of the broader national timetable and called on residents to cooperate with enumerators to ensure complete and accurate coverage during the houselisting and housing census operations.
