Meghalaya CM Boosts PDS Diversification, Rolls Out Nutrition Kits
On April 16, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma chaired a meeting with the Food and Civil Supplies Department to review plans to diversify the state’s Public Distribution System (PDS) under the Mission 1000 Days initiative, with a particular focus on introducing a Meghalaya Nutrition Kit Scheme to strengthen maternal and newborn nutrition. The session brought together senior officials to assess how the PDS can be adapted to deliver more targeted nutritional support to pregnant women and improve early-life health outcomes.
The proposed Meghalaya Nutrition Kit Scheme, discussed at the meeting, aims to provide expecting mothers with a package of essential nutritious items designed to support maternal health and fetal development from the earliest stages. Officials framed the scheme as a measure to reduce malnutrition risks and contribute to healthier births across the state.
Participants also examined options to broaden the range of food items supplied through the PDS, stressing an increased emphasis on nutritious and locally sourced products. The discussions highlighted the need for balanced diets among beneficiaries and for integrating local produce into distribution channels to both improve nutrition and support regional food systems.
Chief Minister Sangma said the initiative is part of the government’s wider effort to reinforce food security while prioritising maternal and child health throughout Meghalaya. Officials reviewed the plan’s objectives and the PDS changes required to implement the nutrition kit proposal, keeping the focus on measurable health benefits for mothers and newborns.
