Discover Culinary Resilience: Adisil, a Heartfelt Sri Lankan Refugee-Run Restaurant, Launches at Ripon Buildings

Nestled in a quiet corner near the Ripon Buildings, Adisil Sri Lankan Restaurant is redefining Chennai’s dining landscape with its authentic Sri Lankan cuisine. As I tuck into a hearty meal of sodhi, sambol, and sweet thothal-a chewy halwa made from coconut milk and palm jaggery-the term ‘hidden gem’ that often pops up in discussions about local eateries suddenly resonates. This newly opened restaurant, just a week into its operations, is spearheaded by women from the Sri Lankan Tamil Rehabilitation Camp in Puzhal, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for diners.

The restaurant, which boasts an extensive menu showcased on its walls and a glass case filled with snacks, is an initiative supported by the Greater Chennai Corporation. It received significant backing from the South India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation & Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils. This collaborative effort aims to empower refugees by nurturing their culinary talents.

Satchithananda Valan Michael, head of the UNHCR field office, emphasizes the importance of self-reliance for refugees. “Through our initiatives, we encouraged residents of the Puzhal camp to explore food entrepreneurship. After successful participation in the Oorum Unavum food festival, we pursued the opportunity to establish Adisil in cooperation with the Greater Chennai Corporation,” he explains.

In charge of the kitchen are Gowri Nathan, G Vijitha, and A Pradeepa, alongside a team of 15 women from the Puzhal camp. Having lived in Tamil Nadu for over three decades, they bring authentic recipes from their homeland to life. The menu features both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals for lunch, all prepared in traditional Sri Lankan style. Vegetarian options start at ₹130, while non-vegetarian meals are priced at ₹170, offering hearty servings of rice, curries, and sides.

Adisil’s location near the bustling Ripon Buildings makes it an appealing choice for various diners-officials seeking quick meals, visitors to Victoria Public Hall, and those craving a taste of home. On my visit, a couple wandered in after being lured by the restaurant’s signage, seeking comfort food reminiscent of their own Sri Lankan roots.

Mentored by restaurateur M Mahadevan of ‘Hot Breads’, the team has received comprehensive training on everything from menu development to hygiene practices. This support ensures they maintain high standards right from the start.

Breakfast offerings include puttu and idiappam, while lunch highlights involve fragrant ghee rice paired with chicken or fish curry, with prices starting below ₹150. The restaurant’s unique use of fresh coconut in dishes, even incorporated into rasam, sets it apart. “Coconut is central to our cuisine; it enriches our poriyals and curries,” says Gowri Nathan, eager to share the culinary traditions they cherish.

With few restaurants in Chennai offering authentic Sri Lankan Tamil food, Adisil fills a niche and is keen on expanding its appeal. There are plans to enhance the dining experience with outdoor seating and additional terrace options.

In their short time open, the team has gracefully adapted to the demands of running a restaurant. As first-time entrepreneurs, they navigate challenges and celebrate their success with a sense of pride. “This is our chance to showcase our home-cooked recipes to a broader audience,” shares Pradeepa, radiating enthusiasm.

Open Monday to Saturday from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM, Adisil Sri Lankan Restaurant invites diners to experience the rich flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine in a supportive and community-driven environment.
