Manipur Crackdown: 3 Militants Arrested, Illegal Bunkers Dismantled
Imphal, April 14 (IANS) — Security forces arrested three militants and dismantled four illegally constructed bunkers in separate operations across Manipur and neighbouring Assam, officials said. The coordinated actions, carried out by Central and state units, also yielded a range of weapons and ammunition and are part of ongoing search-and-area-domination efforts in several districts.
A Manipur Police official said one militant, identified as Hodam Romen Singh alias Naobi (39) of Kamranga in Jiribam, was arrested from Rupnagar in Hojai district of Assam. Naobi is reported to be an extortionist linked to the Revolutionary People’s Front and the People’s Liberation Army and is a co-accused in a case registered at Jiribam police station.
In a separate operation in Thoubal district, two residents of Hiyanglam Awang Leikai — named as Elangbam Surjit Singh and Maibam Ronaldo — were arrested from Lilong village. Authorities recovered a service pistol along with ten 9 mm rounds from the two suspects.
Security teams also destroyed four bunkers in the Mongkot Chepu village area under Litan police station in Ukhrul district and recovered 35 empty cartridge cases at the site. In Kangpokpi district, operations in Tingpibung and Leplen villages led to the recovery of additional arms and ammunition, including five country-made bolt-action single-barrel guns, three pump-action guns, one 36 hand grenade, two 7.62 mm live rounds, 50 empty cases of various calibres, and two radio sets with one charger.
Officials said search operations and area domination exercises are continuing in fringe, mixed-population and other vulnerable areas across multiple districts to curb militant activity. To strengthen surveillance and restrict unlawful movement, 114 checkpoints have been established across both valley and hill districts.
Security forces are also escorting vehicles, including trucks carrying essential commodities, along the Imphal–Jiribam National Highway (NH-37), with tight convoy protection on sensitive stretches to ensure safe movement of traffic.
Manipur Police urged the public not to believe rumours and to be wary of fake videos on social media. “The authenticity of any circulated videos or audio clips should be verified with the Central Control Room. Uploading or sharing unverified or misleading content on social media will invite legal action,” the police statement warned.
