Breaking: Ex-MLA Mominin Surrenders in Garo Hills Violence
Former legislator Esmatur Mominin, wanted after communal disturbances that left two people dead in West Garo Hills last month, surrendered to police at Nongpoh Police Station in Ri-Bhoi district on Monday. The surrender follows weeks of attention on the violence and Mominin’s alleged role in stirring tensions.
“We have registered several cases against the former legislator for inciting communal hatred and violence through inflammatory speeches under various sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act,” West Garo Hills district SP Abraham Sangma said, confirming multiple charges have been filed.
Mominin, who served as the MLA for the Phulbari assembly constituency in West Garo Hills, had on March 9 filed nomination papers at the deputy commissioner’s office in Tura to contest the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections. His decision to seek a seat in the tribal council drew public opposition to the participation of non-tribals in the body. Reports say he was confronted and assaulted by protesters at the time and subsequently rescued by police.
The cases against Mominin allege he made inflammatory speeches that contributed to communal strife. Authorities say investigations are ongoing; police have not yet detailed the next procedural steps following his surrender. The developments come amid heightened scrutiny over communal relations and the criteria for participation in the autonomous council.
