On the occasion of Goru Bihu, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi on Tuesday urged the people of Assam to renew their commitment to economic self-reliance and cultural unity, calling the festival a moment to reaffirm indigenous identity and collective purpose across the state.
In his message marking the celebration, Gogoi said the deeper significance of Goru Bihu lies in strengthening indigenous identity and building a self-sustaining society rooted in tradition. “Let this sacred occasion inspire us to build a self-reliant economy and remain united in protecting our traditions and rights,” he said, adding that he hoped the spirit of Rongali Bihu would bring renewed energy to the people.
Highlighting the day’s cultural importance, the AJP leader noted that Goru Bihu-an integral part of Assam’s agrarian heritage-symbolizes the bond between people and their livestock and represents the backbone of the rural economy. He framed the festival as a reminder of the central role that farming and animal husbandry play in sustaining rural livelihoods.
Gogoi urged citizens to treat the occasion as an opportunity to collectively pledge for economic independence while preserving the state’s rich cultural fabric. Stressing the need for unity, he said cultural cohesion is vital to safeguarding Assam’s identity amid emerging challenges, and called for solidarity across communities.
He appealed to all communities to celebrate the festival in harmony, with pride and a shared vision for a stronger, self-reliant Assam. Goru Bihu, which marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year, sees farmers honouring cattle with ritual baths and traditional practices-observances that underscore gratitude, sustainability and community bonding, values Gogoi said align closely with his call for economic and cultural resilience.
