Women Demand Action on Long Delays for Pink Cards: Strong Reassurances from Delhi Transport Minister

Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh has dispelled rumors of technical issues concerning the distribution of the Pink National Common Mobility Card (PNCMC), also known as the Saheli card. Singh emphasized that the process is proceeding smoothly, aiming to reassure the public about this government initiative.

Moumita Pal, a Delhi resident, highlights the challenges many women face in accessing the card. The 34-year-old has already missed two days of work and incurred a pay cut while standing in line at the pass section of the Sarojini Nagar Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) depot. This marks her second attempt to secure the PNCMC, a significant element of the Delhi government’s strategy to enhance public transport accessibility for women.

Launched in March 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu, the Saheli card serves as a replacement for the previously operational pink ticket system instituted by the earlier Aam Aadmi Party government. This initiative is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government’s broader welfare agenda, designed to provide free travel for women on DTC buses, thereby promoting safety and convenience.

The launch of the PNCMC has been met with a mixture of enthusiasm and frustration. While many women welcome the opportunity for free travel, the implementation process has faced scrutiny. Critics argue that the transition from the old pink ticket system has not been as seamless as promised. Singh’s assurance aims to quell such concerns, as he reiterates the government’s commitment to facilitating a smooth experience for all users.

Moumita’s experience underscores the broader issues many face while navigating public services in Delhi. “I’ve had to rearrange my work schedule just to get this card. It’s frustrating, but I believe in the initiative,” she shared, embodying the hopes and challenges many women are facing in the city.

In response to these challenges, the government has vowed to improve outreach and simplify the application process. Singh indicated that officials are actively working to address bottlenecks and improve the overall efficiency of service delivery at DTC depots.

As the distribution of the Saheli card continues, it remains crucial for the government to ensure that the process meets the needs of those it aims to serve. Active engagement with the community and addressing concerns transparently will be vital for the success of this initiative.

Overall, the Saheli card represents a crucial step forward in women’s empowerment through enhanced transportation options in Delhi. As the city grapples with the logistics of this new program, the hope is that the initiative succeeds in its mission to make public transport safer and more accessible for all women in the capital.
