Asha Bhosle, Legendary Singer, Dies at 92 — Funeral Tomorrow
Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle has died, state authorities announced on April 12, 2026. The 92-year-old reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and was rushed to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on April 11; she was admitted to the emergency unit but could not be revived, officials said. Maharashtra Minister of Cultural Affairs Ashish Shelar confirmed the death.
Family members said the public may pay their respects at Bhosle’s residence, Casa Grande in Lower Parel, on April 13, 2026, between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. Her last rites are scheduled to be performed at Shivaji Park at 4:00 pm on April 13, 2026, her son Anand Bhosle told ANI in a statement posted on April 12. “My mother passed away today. People can pay their last respects to her at 11 am tomorrow at Casa Grande, Lower Parel, where she lived. Her last rites will be performed at 4 pm tomorrow at Shivaji Park,” Anand Bhosle said, according to ANI.
Bhosle’s death marks the end of a nearly eight‑decade career that produced more than 12,000 songs and earned her a place among India’s most influential singers. Often called the “Queen of Indipop,” she was celebrated for her versatility-from bold cabaret numbers and Western‑influenced tracks to classical and ghazal performances. Her early breakthroughs came in the late 1950s with music director O.P. Nayyar, and she later reinvented her sound in the 1970s under R.D. Burman with hits such as “Dum Maro Dum.”
Her notable recordings include “Aaye Meherbaan,” “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” and the emotionally rich renditions in Umrao Jaan (1981), for which she won a National Film Award. Bhosle also held a Guinness World Record for the most studio recordings, a testament to her prolific output and lasting influence on Bollywood and Indian popular music.
Leaders and fans across the country expressed grief at her passing. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described it as a moment of loss for music lovers in India and around the world, praising her as one of the most versatile artists of her generation, according to ANI.
