Israel Strikes, US-Iran Ceasefire Fears Rock Global Oil Markets

A fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is unraveling after a devastating Israeli air campaign in Lebanon left hundreds dead and prompted Tehran to re-close the Strait of Hormuz, officials and witnesses said. The strikes, described by Lebanese authorities as the deadliest single day of the Israel–Hezbollah war, killed 254 people and wounded about 1,165, according to the figures published with the original report; more than 100 strikes were reported within minutes across Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, Sidon and other areas. The violence came less than 48 hours after mediators announced the truce and has brought the agreement to the brink. Updated April 9, 2026.

The United States and Israel contend the truce does not cover operations in Lebanon, but Tehran and Hezbollah called the strikes a “flagrant violation” of the deal. Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, said the attacks were “a flagrant violation of the initial ceasefire agreement and a dangerous indicator of deceit and lack of commitment to potential accords.” Iran’s Revolutionary Guard issued a stark warning that it would respond if attacks on Lebanon continued; however, Iran had not launched missiles at Israel as of the latest update.

In Washington, President Donald Trump publicly chastised Iran over maritime disruption and threatened a forceful response if the truce was breached. On his social media platform he wrote that “Iran is doing a very poor job — dishonourable, some would say — of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz. That is not the agreement we have!” He also warned American forces were “loading up,” saying if the agreement were broken “the shootin’ starts” with a military response “bigger and stronger than anyone has ever seen before.”

Mediation efforts and regional diplomacy intensified amid the fallout. Pakistan said Lebanon’s prime minister, Nawaf Salam, called Pakistani premier Shehbaz Sharif seeking Islamabad’s support to bring an immediate end to attacks on Lebanon. Russian state news agency TASS quoted an unnamed senior Iranian source saying Tehran would initially allow no more than 15 vessels a day to pass through the Strait of Hormuz under the ceasefire terms — a halt and severe curtailment that forced tankers, including one named AUROURA, to perform abrupt U-turns as maritime risk spiked.

Hezbollah reported it launched rocket barrages into northern Israel in retaliation for the Lebanon strikes, marking its first strikes since the truce announcement. With Hormuz closed, evacuation orders issued near the border, and the IRGC on a verbal countdown, the 14-day truce now faces a 24-hour probation period that many describe as “hanging by a thread.” Sources cited in the original dispatch included Al Jazeera, Reuters, AP, Washington Post, NBC and local Lebanese authorities.
