Mayor Visits Jaundice Patients as Water-Borne Outbreak Sparks Alarm
Agartala, April 9, 2026 — Agartala Smart City is facing a recurring outbreak of jaundice, with the densely populated Ramnagar 1 area seeing a steady rise in reported patients. Local residents and officials point to suspected water contamination as the likely cause, prompting concern across the community.
Residents have complained that untreated drinking water supplied by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is spreading the illness. Several families in Ward 16 have reported cases, and neighbours say the number of affected people has been increasing day by day.
In response, Mayor Dipak Majumdar visited the homes of jaundice patients on Thursday and distributed fruits as a gesture of support. In an interview, he confirmed that some Ward 16 residents have been diagnosed with jaundice and that he personally spoke with the affected families during his visits.
Those home visits revealed that the water reaching some households is not being adequately purified. Since jaundice can result from water‑borne infections, Mayor Majumdar said discussions have been held with the water board to investigate and address the quality of supply.
The patients have already sought medical advice, and the mayor expressed hope for their speedy recovery. Despite the outreach, concerns about the safety of drinking water remain significant among local residents, and authorities say the matter is under active consideration by the AMC and the water board.
