Himanta Biswa Sarma on Changing Trends: Astonishing Regional Shifts
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday, April 9, 2026, that voter turnout in the state reflected stronger cross‑community participation, with overall polling likely to reach between 86 and 87 percent. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, he described the day’s voting as unusually broad-based and robust across different social groups.
Sarma recalled that in previous elections some sections of the Muslim community of Bangladeshi origin recorded turnout as high as 95–96 percent, while turnout among other sections of Assamese society had been around 75–76 percent. He said those historical disparities appeared to have narrowed in the current polls.
According to the chief minister, both groups turned out in large numbers this time. Communities that traditionally showed high electoral participation maintained strong turnout, and those that had lagged behind in the past displayed noticeably increased enthusiasm, producing a more balanced participation pattern across the state.
On the likely political outcome, Sarma cautioned that it would be premature to draw conclusions but suggested the BJP‑led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) “could potentially achieve a strong mandate.” He added that crossing the triple‑digit mark — meaning 100 or more assembly seats — in the NDA’s seat share would not be unexpected.
If sustained, the higher and more evenly distributed turnout could reshape electoral arithmetic in Assam by widening the voter base that determines results. Observers say such shifts may influence party strategies and post‑poll coalition calculations as counting approaches.
