Gen Z in Doomdooma Sparks Historic Push for Next-Gen Government
On Thursday, April 9, 2026, large numbers of young voters in Doomdooma constituency turned out to vote in the Assam Assembly elections, signalling a push for a “next generation” government focused on wide-ranging development across the state. The surge of youth participation — particularly first-time voters and young women — gave the day a forward-looking tone as locals sought better education, jobs and opportunities.
“I voted for a government that will truly support the next generation and bring full-scale development to Assam, better education, jobs, and opportunities for all,” said Dipali Kumari, a 25-year-old voter. Her view was echoed by many at polling booths around Doomdooma.
Madalasa Vairaginee, a graduate of Doomdooma College, emphasised women’s issues, saying, “Women empowerment is a major concern across the state. We need policies that not only reform outdated mindsets but also empower women through quality modern education, safety and security measures, assured employment opportunities, and equal access to growth in every sector.”
Enthusiasm was visible at polling stations such as Polling Station 83 at the Beesakopie Division Labour Club inside the sprawling Beesakopie Tea Estate — one of Asia’s largest — despite heavy overnight rain in parts of upper Assam. Voting remained brisk even after 6:30 pm, with turnout at around 85 percent at this key booth in Doomdooma, Tinsukia district.
Young voters also expressed grief over the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19, 2025, after drowning while swimming off Singapore’s Lazarus Island during a cultural event. “Our artists are the soul of Assam’s culture. The new government must ensure their safety and deliver justice in the case of our beloved Zubeen Da so that such tragedies never recur,” said Rupali, a first-time voter.
Some youth offered ideas for democratic reform, suggesting a secure mobile voting app to make participation easier for younger citizens. Across Assam, Gen Z and millennial voters said integrity, development records, education and job creation matter more than traditional party allegiance, with employment, women’s safety and cultural preservation dominating conversations.
Polling in Doomdooma concluded peacefully under tight security provided by the Central Armed Police Forces and Assam Police. Votes from all 126 constituencies, including the Doomdooma contest between BJP’s Rupesh Gowala and INC’s Durga Bhumij, will be counted on May 4, 2026.
