Assam Polls Today: BJP Seeks Third Term Amid Congress Challenge
Assam voters are heading to the polls today to elect a 126-member Assembly in a contest that pits the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance against a Congress-led opposition alliance across most constituencies. The ruling BJP is campaigning for a third consecutive term, while the Congress aims to reclaim the state it lost in 2016.
A total of 722 candidates are in the fray, among them Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, and AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi.
Polling is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 31,490 polling stations spread across 35 districts. About 2.50 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots, including roughly 1.25 crore women and 318 voters registered as third gender.
The outcome will decide whether the BJP secures an unprecedented third term in Assam or whether the Congress-led alliance succeeds in reversing its 2016 defeat, making the day’s voting pivotal for the state’s political direction.
