Mizoram Univ Warns: Rising Temperatures, Erratic Rain in Aizawl
A Mizoram University study analysing 74 years of climate data for Aizawl has found a steady rise in temperatures across all seasons and increasingly erratic rainfall, warning of potential long-term impacts on livelihoods, health and the environment. The research, led by Dr Lamginsang Thomte — a postdoctoral fellow under the ANRF-NPDF scheme at the Dendrochronology Laboratory, Department of Forestry — was conducted under the guidance of Dr Keshav Kumar Upadhyay.
Thomte’s analysis of seven decades-plus of local climate records shows a clear warming trend, becoming especially pronounced from the mid-1990s onward. The study highlights that seasonal warming is widespread: winters are becoming shorter and less cool, and other seasons are showing elevated temperatures compared with earlier decades.
The research specifically notes that “the highest rate of warming is occurring in the post-monsoon months of Oct and Nov,” and also documents growing irregularity in rainfall patterns for the city. These shifting patterns, the study cautions, could have wide-ranging consequences for Aizawl’s communities and ecosystems.
By tracing long-term changes in local climate, the study provides a data-driven signal that Aizawl’s climatic profile is shifting. The findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring and planning to understand and address the social and environmental consequences of rising temperatures and erratic precipitation.
