Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Quits Amid Safety Lapses, Heavy Losses
Air India Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson has resigned amid mounting losses and growing safety concerns following last year’s crash that killed at least 260 people, Mint reported. The move marks a major leadership shift for the carrier as it confronts regulatory scrutiny and pressure to fix compliance failures.
Wilson’s resignation was accepted at a recent board meeting, but he will remain with the airline while serving his notice period and until a successor is appointed, sources told the Hindustan Times. Mint added it could not determine whether majority owner Tata Group has already identified a replacement.
The company has faced sharp criticism over serious safety lapses. Reports say an aircraft was operated eight times without a valid airworthiness certificate and that some planes flew without properly checked emergency equipment. These breaches have intensified scrutiny of Air India’s operational controls and safety culture.
Wilson was appointed CEO and managing director in 2022 on a five-year contract due to run until July 2027. Before joining Air India, he led Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, and served as senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Singapore Airlines, overseeing pricing, distribution, e-commerce, merchandising and global sales.
Air India, chaired by Tata Group chairman N. Chandrasekaran, is 75% owned by Tata Group while Singapore Airlines holds a 25% stake. The airline itself acknowledged in December that there was a “need for urgent improvements in process discipline, communication, and compliance culture,” Reuters reported, and the board was reported in January to be scouting for a new chief executive.
Wilson’s departure comes at a fraught moment for Air India: the carrier must address documented compliance failures, reassure regulators and passengers, and reverse persistent financial losses to restore operational credibility and public trust.
