Liquor Ban in Kamrup on Polling & Counting Days — Voter Alert
The Kamrup district administration has declared “dry days” during the Assam Legislative Assembly elections, ordering a ban on the sale, distribution and possession of liquor and other intoxicants from 5:00 pm on April 7, 2026, until 5:00 pm on April 9, 2026, and again on May 4, 2026 (the counting day) until the counting process is complete. The measure is intended to ensure the free, fair and peaceful conduct of polling across the district.
An order issued by District Commissioner Shri Debar Kumar Mishra directs that all wholesale warehouses, IMFL and beer retail “OFF” and “ON” shops, and country spirit shops in Kamrup will remain closed for the specified periods. The April closure covers the polling scheduled for April 9, 2026.
The prohibition applies to both public and private spaces, including hotels, restaurants, taverns and other shops across the district. During the dry days, possession of liquor and other intoxicants in any of these venues is also forbidden.
“Any violation will invite strict legal action under relevant provisions of the Assam Excise Act and Rules, as well as Section 135(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the district commissioner said in the order.
The District Administration has urged all stakeholders and residents to comply with the directive to help maintain law and order throughout the election process. Authorities warned that enforcement will be strict to safeguard the integrity of polling and counting.
