Assam Polls: Gogoi & Lurinjyoti Lead High-Energy Guwahati Roadshow
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi led a joint roadshow through parts of Guwahati on April 3, campaigning for opposition-alliance candidates in two key assembly constituencies ahead of the Assam Assembly polls. The procession moved from Rajgarh to Six Mile, covering areas of Guwahati Central and New Guwahati, with both leaders greeting residents from atop a vehicle as supporters from Congress and the AJP joined the rally.
Congress candidate Santanu Bora joined the campaign in New Guwahati, while the AJP has fielded Kunki Chowdhury in Guwahati Central. Earlier the same day, the two leaders addressed a joint event in Sarupathar backing AJP candidate Jiban Chutia. The Congress and AJP are part of a six-party alliance contesting the elections.
Speaking at the gatherings, Gaurav Gogoi sharply criticised the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, alleging it had failed to deliver justice in the case involving singer Zubeen Garg and claiming the ruling party opposed the singer’s ideals. Gogoi said the Congress, if elected, would “resolve the matter within 100 days,” a pledge framed as a rapid remedial measure.
He also accused the BJP-led state government of permitting illegal syndicates dealing in cattle, coal, sand and stone to operate. Emphasising communal harmony, Gogoi said his camp would take strict action against anyone making remarks targeting any religion. Reacting to recent comments by the chief minister about Kunki Chowdhury’s family and social media activity, Gogoi said such remarks “diminished the dignity of the office.”
AJP chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi urged voters to reject what he described as “divisive politics,” and criticised the state government over rising prices and unresolved land-rights issues. He stressed that public welfare schemes are funded by taxpayers, not political parties, and assured that beneficiaries-particularly women-would not face harassment under such schemes if the alliance assumes power.
Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4. The joint roadshow underlines the opposition’s push to consolidate support in urban Guwahati constituencies in the final days before voting.
