Don’t Miss Out: Stock Market Holiday Alert for Good Friday 2026! Are NSE, BSE, and MCX Open or Closed on April 3? Find Out Now!
Domestic stock exchanges in India, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), are closed for trading today in observance of the Good Friday holiday. The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), the largest non-agricultural commodity exchange, and the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also remain shut. Trading activities will recommence on Monday, April 6.
On a global scale, many major markets, particularly in the US, UK, and Europe, are also closed today. In contrast, Asian markets such as those in China and Japan will continue operations, while key locales like Hong Kong and Singapore will observe a public holiday.
Thursday witnessed a notable recovery in India’s domestic equities, as bullish sentiment returned to the market. The benchmark indices rebounded sharply, with IT stocks leading the resurgence. The Nifty 50 index climbed a significant 530 points from its intraday low of 22,182.55, closing at 22,713.10, which represents an increase of 33.70 points, or 0.15%, from the previous day’s closing figures. Concurrently, the BSE Sensex surged 1,774 points from its day’s low to close at 73,319.55, marking a gain of 185 points or 0.25% compared to the previous session.
However, the market experienced increased volatility, with the India VIX-a gauge of market expectations-rising over 2% to settle at 25.52 in the prior session.
The holiday calendar for 2026 initially indicated 15 trading holidays, a number that was later updated to include January 15 due to the Mumbai BMC elections. Additionally, markets observed closures on January 26 for Republic Day. March saw three holidays for domestic markets, honoring Holi, Shri Ram Navami, and Shri Mahavir Jayanti.
Upcoming holidays include Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1, and Bakri Id on May 28. In the latter half of the year, closures will occur on Muharram (June 26), Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14), and Gandhi Jayanti (October 2). Dussehra will take place on October 20, followed by Diwali Balipratipada on November 10 and Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 24. The final trading holiday for the year will be Christmas on December 25. Interestingly, Diwali does not have a separate trading holiday due to it falling on a Sunday. However, Muhurat Trading is scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, with specific timings to be announced later.
Any changes to this holiday schedule will be communicated through a separate circular issued in advance by the exchanges.
