Hours after President Donald Trump claimed he had destroyed Iran’s air defenses, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Friday that its newly developed air-defense system shot down another U.S. “stealth” F-35 fighter over central Iran, destroying the aircraft on impact. The IRGC said the jet, belonging to a Lakenheath squadron, was struck by a missile and was completely destroyed; it added that there is no confirmed information yet about the fate of the pilot.
Earlier on Friday morning, the IRGC announced it had also shot down an advanced American warplane south of Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf. According to the statement, after employing advanced radar and defense systems, the targeted aircraft crashed into deep waters between Hengam and Qeshm islands.
Following the operation, the IRGC directly criticized President Trump, saying the incident again proved the U.S. president’s earlier claims to be false. The force said the action was carried out under Iran’s integrated air-defense network and involved modern systems operated by the IRGC Navy.
The developments come amid an escalating tally of U.S. aircraft losses. The source notes that on March 11, an F-35 was reportedly struck over central Iran and forced to make an emergency landing; subsequent reporting suggested that the damaged jet might not be airworthy again in the near term.
Since the start of this confrontation, Iran has claimed it has downed a total of two F-35s, one F-18, two F-16s and four F-15s.
