Shockwaves in Delhi: AAP Ousts Raghav Chadha as Rajya Sabha Deputy Leader-What This Means for His Future!
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has formally requested the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to remove Raghav Chadha from his role as deputy leader in the Upper House, signaling a noteworthy shift in its parliamentary strategy, according to sources cited by news agency PTI. In a communication to the Secretariat, the party not only sought Chadha’s removal but also asked that he be withheld from speaking time allocated to AAP’s quota in the Rajya Sabha.
The party has recommended Ashok Mittal as Chadha’s successor and urged the Secretariat to expedite the formalization of this appointment. Currently, AAP holds 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha, which includes seven representatives from Punjab and three from Delhi.
Raghav Chadha, an influential figure in AAP, has been with the party since its inception, initially collaborating with party leader Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Lokpal Bill in 2012. He quickly ascended through the ranks, serving as a national spokesperson and later becoming AAP’s youngest treasurer following the party’s successful 2015 Delhi elections.
In 2019, Chadha contested the Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi but was defeated by Ramesh Bidhuri. However, he rebounded in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, winning his constituency Rajendra Nagar. He also held the role of vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. Achieving a notable milestone in 2022, Chadha became the youngest Rajya Sabha MP at 33 and has been pivotal in the party’s parliamentary and organizational initiatives, collaborating closely with prominent leaders like Manish Sisodia and Bhagwant Mann. This year, AAP designated him as its leader in the Rajya Sabha, succeeding Sanjay Singh.
Chadha has gained media attention for addressing significant public issues in Parliament. Recently, he drew attention to the harmful practice of “sarpanch pati” or “panchayat pati,” in which women elected to reserved Panchayat positions often serve as mere figureheads while male relatives wield actual power. He urged the government to ensure that women representatives can operate independently, adhering to the intentions of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.
In addition, he has brought critical issues such as menstrual hygiene to the forefront, advocating for it as a matter of health, education, and equity that affects over 350 million women and girls in India. Chadha pointed out that the lack of access to sanitary products, clean water, and privacy causes many girls to miss school, underscoring this as a systemic failure rather than a personal issue. He has also criticized the societal stigma surrounding menstruation, which he describes as a natural biological process.
Earlier this year, during protests led by gig workers, Chadha undertook a unique initiative by working as a delivery partner for a day. This experience was aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and pressures faced by individuals in the gig economy. As AAP adapts its leadership within the Rajya Sabha, the implications of these changes will be closely monitored by political observers and constituents alike.
