Shillong, April 2: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said the state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Elon Musk‑owned Starlink India as part of major steps to expand digital connectivity across Meghalaya. Sangma posted the announcement on a microblogging website, saying the collaboration aims to bring reliable satellite internet to remote areas of the state.
The chief minister said Meghalaya has already seen meaningful transformation through technology and that the new partnership is expected to extend those gains. “We are hopeful that this collaboration will help us reach the remotest corners of our State and make a real difference in people’s lives,” Sangma wrote.
Sangma described the MoU signing as an important step to introduce advanced satellite connectivity technology in Meghalaya. He said the initiative could save lives by improving access to healthcare, enhance learning opportunities for students, and boost livelihoods for farmers and rural communities.
The government is also pursuing plans to develop Shillong as a regional technology hub. “We are also committed to transforming Shillong into a hub for IT and technology in the Northeast, creating opportunities for our talented youth and building a strong digital ecosystem for the future,” Sangma added.
The agreement with Starlink India signals Meghalaya’s push to use satellite internet to bridge digital divides and support public services, education and rural economies as the state invests in a broader digital infrastructure. PTI
