Hek Demands Urgent Talks on FCRA Bill: What’s Next?
Senior BJP leader A.L. Hek has asked the party’s central leadership to hold meaningful consultations with stakeholders before the Foreign Contribution Regulation (Amendment) Bill is passed, he said in a letter dated April 1 from Shillong. The letter, addressed to BJP president Nitin Nabin and Home Minister Amit Shah, stresses the need for dialogue with groups affected by the legislation ahead of its enactment.
Hek highlighted the extensive philanthropic work carried out by non-profit organisations in Meghalaya, specifically mentioning the Church, and said these activities have a direct impact on the lives of citizens. He urged the leadership to consider the local social and developmental role of credible NGOs when framing or implementing any new rules.
Emphasising a balanced approach, Hek called for safeguards that ensure accountability for foreign-funded organisations while preserving their functional independence. He argued that careful consultation and calibrated regulation are necessary to protect legitimate charitable activity without compromising transparency and oversight.
