Manipur MP Bimol Akoijam on April 1 blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the recent unrest in Manipur, making the issue the central plank of his campaign while canvassing for Congress candidate Shanti Kumar Singh in Lakhipur, Assam. Speaking at the Congress office in Silchar, Akoijam charged that the incidents that occurred in Manipur “happened due to the BJP,” directly attributing the violence and disorder to the ruling party’s policies.
Akoijam argued the situation in Manipur reflects a broader pattern of governance that, in his view, promotes division rather than unity. “Don’t think of Manipur as separate from India-it is an integral part of India,” he said, warning that the implications of the crisis extend beyond state boundaries and affect national cohesion.
He accused the BJP of having “divided Manipur by labelling people as tribal and non-tribal,” and cautioned that Assam-given its diverse social composition-could face similar fissures if such strategies persist. Akoijam said that political labelling risks deepening fault lines among communities for electoral gain and urged voters to be alert to those tactics.
Framing the Congress campaign as an antidote, he stressed unity and appealed to voters to reject divisive narratives. “We are all one,” he said, urging public support for Congress in the upcoming Assam election as a means to counter communal and social polarization.
Akoijam also attacked the BJP’s campaign messaging in Assam, likening an advertisement to an “April Fool’s joke” and claiming the public had already recognised it as such. He expressed confidence that this perception would benefit Congress candidates at the polls.
Turning to state governance, Akoijam criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for what he called empty rhetoric. “He only makes big talks but doesn’t come to the practical field,” Akoijam said, pointing to a shortage of doctors on the ground despite promises of large hospital projects, and alleging that such grand claims mislead the public about real healthcare delivery.
