A Russian military An-26 cargo aircraft crashed on a steep slope in Crimea, killing 29 people, officials said. Authorities reported the dead included the pilot and six crew members; the remainder were passengers.
Russia’s state news agency TASS said on Wednesday morning that contact with the plane was lost on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. Moscow time. Investigators suspect a mechanical failure may have caused the accident.
The crash site has been located, but the Russian military has not released detailed information and the exact number of people on board remains unclear. A source cited by reporters said there was no sign the aircraft was hit by a missile or a drone, and that a bird strike was also not responsible. Members of a military commission have been sent to the scene to determine the cause.
The Antonov An-26 is a twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft that can carry up to 40 passengers or cargo. First used in the 1960s for both military and civilian transport, the type remains in service for short- and medium-range missions. Russian military An-26s have been involved in several previous accidents. According to the same source, crashes have occurred in Ukraine, South Sudan and the Ivory Coast in past years, including a 2022 accident in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, a 2020 training crash in northeastern Ukraine that killed 27 people, a 2020 crash in South Sudan that killed eight people including five Russian citizens, and a 2017 accident in Ivory Coast that killed four.
