TTAADC Elections: High-Stakes Political Showdown in Tripura
Agartala: Elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on April 12, 2026, have set up a high-stakes, multi‑cornered battle after seat‑sharing talks collapsed, with 173 candidates vying for control of the 28‑member council and an electorate of over 9.6 lakh (about 960,000) voters. Counting of votes will take place on April 17, 2026, and the outcome will determine the political leadership of the autonomous tribal body.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Tipra Motha Party are each contesting all 28 seats independently, underscoring the failure of alliance negotiations. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has fielded candidates in 27 constituencies, the Indian National Congress is contesting 25 seats, and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the BJP, has put forward candidates in 24 seats, creating a crowded and competitive field.
Election officials said 181 nominations were initially received, but eight candidates withdrew their papers by the March 28, 2026 deadline, leaving 173 contestants in the final list. State election commission secretary Anurag Sen confirmed those figures.
The poll follows the 2021 TTAADC elections, when Tipra Motha won 18 seats to form the council and the BJP‑IPFT alliance secured nine. This year’s fractured contest and full‑slate strategies by major parties make the outcome difficult to predict and heighten the stakes for tribal governance and regional political alignments.
