Mary Kom Backs Fit India Cycling Sundays — Make Fitness Essential
Olympic medallist Mary Kom took part in the “Fit India Sundays on Cycle” drive, lending her support to a nationwide campaign that encourages healthier lifestyles through community cycling. The weekly programme, launched in December 2024 under the guidance of Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, runs simultaneously across states and union territories and aims to make fitness a regular habit. Officials said lakhs of citizens now take part each week at thousands of locations.
Addressing participants, Mary Kom thanked the organisers, saying: “I want to say thanks to the organisers for organising this ‘Sunday on Cycles’ event, which is actually part of the ‘Fit India Movement’… I am personally very concerned about my fitness.” She urged people to adopt regular physical activity and simple habits like cycling to stay healthy.
The boxer said the event evoked memories of her childhood and the role sport played in shaping her early years. “This event really brought back memories of my childhood… I used to have a small bicycle back then, and I used it for everything,” she said, adding that such activity “is absolutely essential” for maintaining health.
The drive is organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India, with support from several sports bodies and local fitness groups. Activities are held at training centres and grassroots sports hubs to widen community participation.
The campaign aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to integrate fitness into daily life and also targets broader public-health concerns, including rising obesity and pollution. Organisers say the emphasis on simple, accessible activities such as cycling is intended to make fitness inclusive and sustainable for citizens across the country.
