Unveiling Sivaganga AC: The Overlooked Administrative Heartbeat Dwarfed by Karaikudi’s Political Might

Despite its rich history as the birthplace of freedom fighters like Queen Velu Nachiyar and the Maruthu Brothers, Sivaganga Assembly Constituency remains mired in developmental challenges. Home to renowned poets like Okkur Masathiyar and Kambar, this constituency-administratively critical to the district-boasts an electorate of 276,156, divided between 135,113 men and 141,038 women. The AIADMK has maintained a stronghold here since 2001, barring the 2006 and 2011 elections, with current MLA P.R. Senthilnathan seeking re-election in 2026.

The choice of Sivaganga as the administrative capital during the 1983 reorganization of Ramanathapuram district was a nod to its cultural significance. Yet, locals contend that Karaikudi’s political and economic prowess has overshadowed Sivaganga, often diverting crucial infrastructure projects to its neighbor. Shanmuganadhan, a local grocer, suggested bifurcating the district to ensure equitable development. “Karaikudi has been declared a corporation and receives significant funding-Sivaganga struggles with stagnant infrastructure and minimal industrial investment,” he lamented.

Local businesses largely survive on the patronage of government employees, and calls for a nursing college at the Government Medical College Hospital have gone unmet. Shanmuganadhan stressed, “If enough educational institutions with diverse courses were available nearby, it could help reduce the dropout rate among female students from rural areas.”

Former Municipal Chairman M. Arjunan linked the rising crime rates and deteriorating law and order to inadequate educational facilities and industrial growth. “Local youth have limited prospects-the only options are to migrate for jobs or remain underemployed,” he observed. This stagnation, he noted, often drives them toward crime and substance abuse. Despite numerous studies highlighting these issues, governmental responses have been lackluster at best.

Agricultural woes further complicate the constituency’s challenges. Farmers depend heavily on rainfall and are pinning hopes on the Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundar link project for consistent water supply. Launched in 2021, the project’s progress has stalled, exacerbating water scarcity concerns. Additionally, the long-dormant SIDCO industrial estate represents untapped potential for local employment.

Arjunan proposed expanding the small graphite extraction sector into a full-fledged industry to harness abundant local resources. Reports from five decades ago indicated promising graphite deposits in areas like Udayanathapuram and Kumarapatti. An operational graphite factory could create thousands of jobs, spurring the development of ancillary industries and transforming Sivaganga into an industrial hub.

Addressing the graphite factory’s stagnation, MLA Senthilnathan highlighted past promises made by key political figures, asserting that, “Funds were allocated during Jayalalithaa’s tenure for plant expansion, but subsequent promises from P. Chidambaram and his son have gone unfulfilled.” He noted that while the AIADMK had managed to secure operational permissions, no actions have been taken under the current DMK government.

In a separate concern, advocate Kotai Raman criticized efforts to relocate the Additional District Courts to Karaikudi, claiming it would burden local legal practitioners. “How can a law college be established there when only minimal courts exist?” he questioned, emphasizing the need for coherent legal and educational frameworks.

As frustrations mount over prevailing neglect, it is clear that efficient and sustainable development is crucial to addressing the longstanding issues faced by Sivaganga residents.
