While the V70 doesn’t represent a significant evolution over its predecessor, the V60, it has managed to improve the user experience in several key areas, making it a noteworthy option in the $400-$500 price range. Its rapid product cycle gives the V70 a more lateral feeling compared to noticeable upgrades, but it still stands out as a good bargain for photography enthusiasts.
Design-wise, Vivo has opted for familiar aesthetics seen across various brands, moving away from the rounded camera module of the V60 to a more contemporary squared-off look. The Aura Light has been resized, maintaining its brightness but integrating it into the camera module design. The V70 reintroduces a telephoto camera to its rear array, aligning it more closely with Vivo’s flagship X Series. Additionally, aluminum edges replace the previous plastic trim, enhancing the device’s premium feel while maintaining an IP68/69 rating for dust and water resistance. The 6.59-inch AMOLED display also benefits from a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support, although switching between refresh rates could be smoother across all applications.
Under the hood, the V70 is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chipset and features a robust 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery, offering impressive longevity. It’s worth noting, however, that the absence of wireless charging is a missed opportunity, especially as competing mid-range phones like Google’s Pixel A series include this feature. While my review unit boasted 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, lower-spec variants are available for more budget-conscious consumers. The device now includes eSIM capabilities, which may have varying success in regions like North America but works well in parts of Europe and Asia.
The camera setup remains a staple of the V Series, with significant attention given to the 50-megapixel main sensor, known for its impressive color science and low-light performance. However, the ultra-wide camera, despite being functional, feels underwhelming compared to other options in the market. Vivo’s collaboration with Zeiss continues to enhance the color processing capabilities, offering customizable photographic styles.
On the software side, the transition to OriginOS improves usability, making the V70 feel snappier and more aligned with its higher-end counterparts. While the camera hardware stays relatively consistent, the imaging software maintains the strong performance witnessed in earlier models. Both main and telephoto cameras provide excellent results, but some historical weaknesses in the ultra-wide sensor remain.
The video capabilities of the V70 show little evolution, missing features like a dedicated video mode or advanced settings common in its competitors. Recording options max out at 4K and 1080p, with limitations on frame rates and effects.
Overall, the Vivo V70 excels as a mid-range smartphone with strong photographic capabilities, appealing particularly to budget-conscious users who prioritize a robust software experience. Its familiarity to the V60 may deter some, but the improvements in design and usability make it a solid choice for mobile photographers looking for an affordable yet capable device. Alternatives such as the Vivo V60, Oppo Reno 15, and others provide viable competition, but the V70 stands firmly in its niche. Availability in North America may be limited, but for users in Europe and Asia, this device could easily fit their photography needs without breaking the bank.
