Crucial Singapore Verdict Bolsters Assam’s Case in Zubeen Garg Death
Guwahati, March 25 — The Singapore coroner’s court has ruled that Assamese singer Zubeen Garg’s death was an accidental drowning, a finding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday aligns with the Assam government’s investigation and shows “no contradiction” between the two probes.
State Coroner Adam Nakhoda concluded that Garg’s death was “simply due to an unfortunate and tragic accidental drowning,” echoing the Police Coast Guard’s (PCG) determination that there was no foul play in the incident.
Speaking during a campaign stop in Nagaon, Sarma said the Singapore verdict broadly matches the observations in Assam’s chargesheet, including conclusions about alcohol consumption. “There is no difference between the Singapore judgement and our chargesheet,” he said, noting the coroner found Garg had been drinking the previous night.
Sarma highlighted that the Singapore court referenced roughly 380 ml of alcohol, a figure he said is “in line with what we had recorded,” and argued that this consistency strengthens the state’s case.
Despite accepting the coroner’s findings on cause of death and alcohol levels, Sarma said the Assam Police inquiry goes further into the circumstances surrounding how the alcohol was consumed. “Our position is that he was made to drink. We believe this was not entirely voluntary but part of a larger conspiracy,” he said.
Responding to criticism from opposition leaders such as Akhil Gogoi and Dulu Ahmed over why Assam Police did not visit Singapore, Sarma asked what would have been achieved by sending investigators abroad. He said the “key aspects” of the probe — including the financial trail and related evidence — are linked to Assam and that alleged conspiratorial elements have their roots in the state.
Reiterating allegations from the chargesheet, Sarma named Amritprava as being “part of a conspiracy and intentionally made Zubeen consume alcohol,” and stressed that the state’s investigation was conducted “independently, beyond politics.”
The Singapore ruling excludes foul play within its jurisdiction. Parallel legal proceedings in Assam, however, continue to probe other aspects of the case.
