Unleash Your Passion: Why Tiger Enthusiasts Must Explore the Untamed Beauty of Tadoba and Gothangaon

When cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar first encountered tigress Junabai at the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, Sunil Mehta, an advocate for community-based nature conservation, playfully remarked that Tendulkar had “just licked the opium.” Puzzled, Sachin learned that the allure of the tiger would draw him back to these jungles time and again, an assertion validated by his frequent visits to Tadoba for tiger safaris, with his latest in November 2024, celebrating the 10th anniversary of The Bamboo Forest safari lodge.

Experiencing a tiger safari in Maharashtra is nothing short of exhilarating. Just moments after entering the Umred Pauni Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, a guide announces, “Tiger sighting has started. Please hold on,” signaling the driver to accelerate. As the vehicle barrels through the dense terrain, the thrill intensifies, with the rocky roads and unexpected encounters with jungle flora contributing to the adventure. Yet, the excitement genuinely lies in the silent anticipation of spotting wildlife-keeping an eye out for the signature orange hide of a tiger or any movement in the undergrowth.

According to Arjun Manjunath, associate director of The Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy, the anticipation shapes the experience. Unlike expansive African safaris, the dense forests require keen observation to catch glimpses of elusive felines. Guides utilize pugmarks and animal calls to track tigers, as every species in the jungle signals the presence of an apex predator. “When a tiger is nearby, the entire ecosystem takes notice,” says Arjun, emphasizing the importance of understanding this dynamic.

Ankita Pathak, a naturalist at The Bamboo Forest, highlights that a safari transcends mere tiger spotting. Every journey provides insights into various ecosystems-woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands-while educating guests on the vital roles different species play within the habitat. “It’s not just about tigers; it’s essential to appreciate the whole ecosystem, including birds and smaller mammals,” she notes.

The revenue generated from safaris significantly supports local communities, helping to mitigate human-animal conflicts. Notably, sightings of tigers can be uncertain due to their unpredictable nature. “Naturalists stay in constant communication to share information on sightings,” Ankita explains, while detailing the potential to learn from indirect evidence such as scratch marks or bird calls, even if the elusive tiger remains unseen.

Sunil reflects on his transformative childhood trip to Sariska Tiger Reserve, which ignited his passion for wildlife conservation. He argues that witnessing a tiger in its habitat offers an incomparable experience compared to a zoo. Anoopama Mukerjee Lohana, a wellness director at The Bamboo Forest, points out that nature-based experiences have gained popularity post-pandemic, with expectations for “green prescriptions” becoming a new travel trend. Safari-goers now seek wellness in nature, reconnecting with both the environment and themselves.

While popular tiger reserves such as Pench and Jim Corbett are well-known, Arjun asserts that Tadoba and Umred Pauni Karhandla are gaining recognition in wildlife tourism. “Fifteen years ago, Tadoba had only about 25 tigers; today, that number has surpassed 100,” he shares, highlighting the area’s rich biodiversity, bolstered by numerous water bodies that attract migratory birds.

Guests at The Bamboo Forest Experience not only embark on thrilling safaris but also enjoy wellness amenities that enhance their connection to nature. Integrating Ayurveda into meals and providing a sensory experience, the lodge caters to the holistic wellness of its visitors while embracing the rich biodiversity surrounding them.

Whether it’s the thrill of a tiger sighting or the calming embrace of the wilderness, a safari in Maharashtra promises an unforgettable adventure, reaffirming why so many, including the ‘God of Cricket,’ are drawn back to the wild time and again.
