Meghalaya Tribal Body Demands Probe Over Thick Smoke at Riangdo
The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has lodged a formal complaint with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), alleging serious air pollution by Riangdo Veneer Industry Pvt Ltd after an incident on March 18. HITO says its members witnessed heavy emissions from the company’s factory chimney and have urged immediate regulatory action to protect local residents and the environment.
In its submission to the MSPCB, HITO reported a “considerable discharge of thick black smoke” from the chimney, calling the episode “a matter of significant concern regarding air pollution.” The organisation said the visible emissions point to a likely breach of prescribed air quality standards.
HITO warned that the releases not only violate pollution control norms but also pose health risks to communities living near the facility. The group stated the emissions “contravene the pollution control norms” set by the MSPCB, which are intended to safeguard both the environment and local populations.
The complaint urges the unit to install and operate effective Pollution Control Devices (PCDs), especially during the incineration of waste such as logs and by‑products. HITO stressed that these systems should be activated “as soon as the boilers commence operation” to limit harmful discharges.
HITO has requested that the MSPCB conduct a detailed inspection of the plant to assess compliance with environmental regulations. The organisation has asked for “appropriate actions” if violations are confirmed, including penalties or mandated operational changes.
To support its case, HITO said it documented the incident and recorded video evidence stored on a pen drive, which will be submitted for official review. HITO leaders expressed hope the authorities will treat the complaint with urgency and take prompt steps to address the situation.
