Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday, March 23, 2026, formally entered the Assam Assembly election contest by submitting his nomination from the Jorhat constituency, marking his first attempt at a state-level poll. Gogoi, who serves as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, led the campaign activity in Jorhat ahead of the polls.
He began the day with visits to several places of worship across Jorhat before launching a public march from Jorhat Stadium. The procession attracted a large crowd and lasted nearly three hours, finishing at the District Commissioner’s office where he filed his nomination papers.
As part of his outreach, Gogoi stopped at a gurdwara, Borde Gosani Temple, Macharhat Bor Namghar, Tarajan Mosque and a church on Jail Road, meeting and speaking with people from different communities at each stop. The multi-faith circuit underscored his campaign’s emphasis on inclusivity and local engagement.
Addressing the public, Gogoi said, “Citizens in Assam are looking for openness in governance,” and added that the Congress is working to bring greater accountability. He described the election as a moment for change, saying voters now have the chance to reshape the state’s political landscape.
Gogoi also warned that the tone of political discussion in Assam has weakened over time and drawn attention beyond the state. He said the Congress campaign will focus on building a better, more inclusive Assam and expressed confidence that voters will make informed choices.
He extended support to party nominees and allies in the district, wishing well-known candidates such as Pran Kurmi from Titabar and Pallavi Saikia Gogoi from Teok. In Jorhat, Gogoi is set to face BJP leader and sitting MLA Hitendranath Goswami, a long-time representative of the constituency who has contested earlier as an AGP member and later as a BJP candidate.
