Game-Changing Snow Clearance by BRO Sparks Tourism Surge at Nathu La
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has cleared heavy snow and reopened key mountain routes in East Sikkim, restoring access to Nathu La Pass (14,140 ft), the Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir and the Dzuluk Loops after severe winter disruptions during the week leading up to March 22, 2026, a BRO press release said. The reopening, completed amid extreme conditions, has already helped revive tourist movement and economic activity in the region.
Over the period up to March 22, temperatures plunged to nearly −20°C and several stretches were buried under thick snow, rendering roads impassable. The Dzuluk Loops — notorious for sharp hairpin bends and steep gradients — and the high-altitude Nathu La route presented particular clearance challenges, the release noted. BRO teams worked continuously with heavy machinery and snow-clearing units to restore vehicular passage.
The BRO said the restored connectivity has given a timely boost to local businesses that rely on pilgrimage and tourist traffic to sites such as the Baba Mandir and the scenic passes. Sikkim Tourism and Project Swastik coordinated closely with BRO to manage traffic, safety and route maintenance, ensuring the corridors remain safe and efficient despite difficult terrain and weather, the release added.
