Jayanta Das Quits BJP After 35 Years, Cites ‘Disregard’ — Shock Exit

Guwahati, March 21 — Senior BJP leader Jayanta Kumar Das resigned from the party in a letter dated March 20 after being denied the party ticket for the Dispur constituency, saying he was stepping down because of “personal inconveniences.” He tendered his resignation to the state party president and announced the decision on social media, accusing the party of placing other considerations above loyalty and sacrifice.

In the letter, Das wrote: “I hereby tender my resignation from all positions, including primary membership of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, on account of my personal inconveniences.” He told supporters that being denied a ticket caused him pain but that what wounded him more was the perceived disregard for his 35 years of service to the party.

Das added that his commitment to public service would continue despite leaving the BJP. “I may have left the party, but I have not abandoned my commitment to serve the people of Dispur,” he said, and paid tribute to the legacy of Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a personal inspiration.

The resignation follows public expressions of dissatisfaction on March 19, when Das sharply criticised party leadership for allegedly sidelining long‑time BJP workers in favour of leaders who recently defected from the Congress and questioned the reliance on internal surveys for candidate selection. The Dispur ticket was instead allotted to Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the BJP after leaving the Indian National Congress.

Reacting to Das’s exit at a press briefing on March 20, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the leader’s disappointment but played down the chances of a permanent split, saying, “I believe Jayanta Das will not resign.” Sarma framed the episode as part of politics’ rough moments, invoking the party’s internal resilience and unity and noting that events like the party’s “Amrit Manthan” produced both “poison and nectar.”

Das’s resignation highlights mounting tensions within the Assam BJP over candidate selection and the integration of recent entrants from other parties, a fault line that could influence party cohesion and campaign dynamics as elections approach.
