Hidden in Plain Sight: Stunning New Species Discovered in Arunachal

Scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) have described two previously unrecorded plant species from Arunachal Pradesh, adding to India’s botanical inventory and underscoring the Eastern Himalaya’s global importance as a biodiversity hotspot. The newly named plants, Henckelia clarkei and Henckelia zingnui, belong to the Gesneriaceae family, a group of flowering plants that includes familiar ornamentals as well as many wild species found in moist, shaded habitats.

The discoveries, reported by BSI researchers, were made in Arunachal Pradesh’s rich forest landscapes-areas long recognised for high species diversity and endemism. That plants new to science could be “hidden in plain sight” in these landscapes highlights both the region’s unexplored biological wealth and the ongoing need for field surveys and taxonomic study.

Scientific description and formal documentation by BSI mean these species are now part of India’s official botanical record, enabling further study of their ecology, distribution and potential conservation needs. Identifying and naming species is a critical step toward assessing their vulnerability and planning protections in the face of habitat change.

While details such as precise localities and ecological traits were not included in the initial report, the announcement reinforces the Eastern Himalaya’s status as one of the world’s richest regions for plant diversity and reminds policymakers, researchers and local communities of the value of sustained biodiversity research and conservation in Arunachal Pradesh.
