Debabrata Saikia Files Nomination in Nazira — Bold Bid for Fourth Term
Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition in Assam, filed his nomination on March 20 from the Nazira assembly constituency in Sivasagar, formally seeking a fourth term. The submission, carried out after completing the required election formalities, was attended by senior Congress leaders, including state party president Gaurav Gogoi.
Nazira has long been associated with Saikia’s family: it was earlier represented by his father, former chief minister Hiteswar Saikia, and later by his mother, Hemoprava Saikia, underscoring the constituency’s familial political legacy. Saikia’s bid continues that legacy as he contests the upcoming state polls.
For this election, the Congress has entered into a broad opposition front with parties including Raijor Dal, the Assam Jatiya Parishad, the CPI(M), CPI(ML) Liberation, and the All Party Hills Leaders Conference to contest the state jointly. The alliance aims to consolidate anti-incumbency votes against the ruling coalition.
After filing his nomination, Saikia said he was hopeful about the election outcome and expressed confidence that the opposition alliance has a strong chance to form the next state government, challenging the current BJP-led administration.
