Delhi’s Rainy Forecast: IMD Issues Urgent Yellow Alert Until March 20; Indigo & SpiceJet Warn of Delays!
Delhi experienced rainfall for the second consecutive day on March 19, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate showers, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h across various regions. The weather in the National Capital Region is expected to remain unsettled, prompting advisories from local airlines regarding potential flight delays.
The IMD specified that areas such as Khairthal, Kotputli, and Alwar in Rajasthan are likely to witness hailstorms or thunderstorms in the evening, with moderate rainfall expected. Other regions impacted by light to moderate rainfall include Panipat, Gohana, and Sonipat in Haryana, as well as Baraut, Khekra, and Shamli in Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, lighter rainfall of 20-30 km/h winds is anticipated in districts such as Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, and Karnal in Haryana, alongside several areas in Uttar Pradesh like Hapur and Bulandshahar. The IMD advises that these weather patterns are expected to persist over the next two hours, urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions.
Overhead, airline operations were affected by the inclement weather. IndiGo issued a travel advisory via X, warning passengers of possible delays in both departures and arrivals due to expected thunderstorms over Delhi and Bangalore. The airline reassured travelers that measures were in place to mitigate disruptions while urging them to check flight statuses on their website or app before heading to the airport.
Similarly, Air India warned passengers that ongoing rain and gusty winds could influence operations at Delhi’s airport and potentially at other northern airports. The airline encouraged travelers to verify flight information before leaving home and to account for slower road traffic during this period.
Looking ahead to March 20, the IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky in Delhi NCR, along with more light to moderate rainfall. Morning weather is expected to include light rain with thunderstorms and stronger surface winds gusting up to 50 km/h. Sporadic spells of rain are likely to persist throughout the day, accompanied again by thunder and lightning.
As the weather remains unpredictable, residents and travelers are advised to remain updated on conditions and prepare for variations in travel plans.
