Breaking: BJP Names Candidates for Nagaland, Tripura Bypolls
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced its candidates for several Assembly by-elections, naming Daochier I. Imchen for Nagaland’s 28-Koridang (ST) seat and Jahar Chakraborti for Tripura’s 56-Dharmanagar constituency. The announcements come as the Election Commission of India prepares a multi-state by-election schedule to fill vacant assembly seats.
The vacancies in Koridang and Dharmanagar arose following the deaths of sitting legislators — former Minister Imkong L. Imchen in Nagaland and senior leader and former Minister Biswa Bandhu Sen in Tripura. The by-elections are part of a larger exercise to fill vacancies in eight assembly constituencies across six states, most of which were necessitated by the deaths of incumbents.
Alongside the Nagaland and Tripura nominations, the BJP has named Ritesh Ravi Naik for the 21-Ponda seat in Goa. In Karnataka, the party has fielded Veerabhadrayya Charantimath for Bagalkot and Srinivas T. Dasakariyappa for Davanagere South.
Polling for constituencies in Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland and Tripura will be held in the first phase on April 9, while the second phase — covering seats in Gujarat and Maharashtra — is scheduled for April 23. Counting of votes for all constituencies is slated for May 4, with the entire election process expected to conclude by May 6. The gazette notification for the first phase was issued on March 16; the last date for filing nominations is March 23, scrutiny will take place on March 24, and candidates may withdraw their nominations until March 26.
These by-elections are being conducted to fill vacancies in the respective state legislative assemblies.
