West Asia conflict sparks LPG panic in Manipur; govt control room
Imphal: Rising anxiety over the conflict in Western Asia, particularly tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, has sparked panic buying and hoarding of filled LPG cylinders in Manipur, prompting the state government to set up a dedicated control room to monitor supplies and handle public complaints. The control room, staffed by three officials, began operations at the head office of the Directorate of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (CAF&PD), Government of Manipur, effective Wednesday.
Consumers and members of the public seeking to lodge complaints, share information, or obtain details about LPG and other petroleum products have been asked to contact the CAF&PD control room or their district monitoring committees. A special team led by Haobam Bobby Singh, Officer on Special Duty (OSD/POL – Petroleum, Oil & Lubricants) for the CAF&PD, has been tasked with overseeing the response and coordination.
The department issued a clarification that there is no shortage of LPG or other petroleum products in the state. It said the recent disruption in distribution was caused by a technical fault in the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system at the all-India level, a problem that has since been resolved and normal supply channels restored.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Imphal, has also confirmed that adequate stocks of LPG and other petroleum products are available across Manipur. Authorities stressed that existing inventories and distribution arrangements remain sufficient to meet consumer demand.
The CAF&PD urged residents not to panic or engage in unnecessary hoarding, warning that bulk storage of filled cylinders can create serious safety hazards. Officials said sustained monitoring through the control room and district committees will continue to ensure stable supplies and rapid resolution of any further issues.
