UPPL Announces Seven Candidates — Pramod Boro Eyes Tamulpur Win
Guwahati: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) on Monday released its first list of seven candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, scheduled for April 9, 2026, naming party president Pramod Boro as its nominee for the 43 Tamulpur (ST) seat. The selections were approved by Boro after recommendations from the party’s Central Working Committee and Core Committee.
The UPPL announced Aninda Basumatary for 1 Gossaigaon, Raju Kumar Narzary for 2 Dotma (ST), Lawrence Islary for 3 Kokrajhar (ST), Nerswn Boro for 45 Bhergaon, Dipen Boro for 46 Udalguri (ST), and Kamalsingh Narzary for 20 Bijni. The party said the candidate list was formally released by UPPL General Secretary (Administration) Raju Kumar Narzary.
The announcement comes as the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct is in force, restricting official government actions and shaping campaign activity across the state. Party sources said the UPPL has already begun road rallies in the region as it steps up election preparations.
Separately, the UPPL is weighing whether to leave the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ahead of polling. Party leaders discussed the matter at a core committee meeting in Kokrajhar on March 15, and sources said the UPPL had written to the BJP’s state unit on March 10 but did not receive a response, prompting internal debate on withdrawal from the alliance.
Speaking to reporters, Raju Kumar Narzary said the issue was deliberated at the meeting and “the party is likely to make an official announcement on the issue soon.” He added that the final course will reflect public sentiment and stressed the UPPL’s focus on maintaining the balance of power in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), noting that voters often turn to MLAs when they are dissatisfied with their MCLAs.
